I’d like to learn to play golf, where does one start?

I’d like to learn the sport, however I am remiss about spending a ton of money on clubs and fees. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get started?

The cheapest and easiest way is to ask a friend who golfs to go to driving range. Most golfers have some extra clubs lying around.

On your own, probably the easiest way is to call around to local courses/driving ranges and ask if they have a beginner’s clinic. They will be much cheaper than private lessons, as it is taught like a class to maybe 12-20 people. When you find one, tell them you don’t have clubs, and they will tell you what you need at minimum, or they might even be able to provide clubs for you.

If you were interested in getting a couple clubs, either on eBay, a used club store (most of these stores have a barrel where you can get some cheap clubs) or borrow/buy elsewhere, at the minimum, go out and get a 3wood, a 7iron, and a putter.

Alternatively, you could go out and look for a starter set. (Ususally driver, 3wood, 3,5,7,9 irons, and putter).

Check with your local community education office, or Parks & Rec’s departments. They may offer adult ed courses on beginner’s golf at a local course, and clubs will be provided for you. Before you spend all the money in getting clubs made or purchased, find out if you even like it first. Have fun!

you can rent clubs at the golf course, or borrow them from a friend. most people who try golf like it. Especially if you like the idea of drinking and smoking while walking around outside in a beautiful setting and playing a sport. You’ll love it, just buy some clubs.

Prayer, commit yourself to an insane asylum – those are my first two thoughts… But don’t make the mistake of going to the course. You will just feel like a failure and be discouraged. Go to the range with someone who plays well and just hit balls. Get a swing of your own before you try a round…

You should go to play it again sports and buy a pair of slightly used golf clubs and then spend 6 months perfecting your swing and then go to a driving range for 6 months and then you should go to a public course and play a game every 2 months while in between going to the driving range

Go to a local public golf course. Ask the PGA pro who works there to get you started. He can get you a used set of clubs and a series of lessons so you don’t waste your time trying to learn yourself. You will have more fun once you learn the basic. It is also best to learn golf course educate from the pro so you don’t upset the other golfers. You will hear some new words at first and some will come out of your own mouth. You don’t need to drink or smoke but it seems to help.

I’d actually have to say that you’d need to just go to a driving range. Practice hitting some golf balls off of a tee. If you don’t want to spend that much money, I can’t help you on that one. I’ve been only golfing for a couple of months, having that same idea of not spending that much money, and had that idea for about a couple of weeks, and then I needed to spend some money for clubs. I’d go to a local driving range and buy some clubs there. I got some Callaways for about $200 (3-9 Irons w/ W4, SW, & PW)

I bought a driver at the Goodwill store for a dollar. I went to the driving range and just whacked a few buckets of balls until I learned to hit it. Then I bought a full set of irons at a garage sale and learned to use those. Now I’ve played a few times and know that I like the game before spending a ton on clubs. My next set will probably be a set of Ram clubs from K-mart or Intech’s from Meijer’s for less than $150.
