I feel the best way to learn golf is by teaching and not reading or watching... Learning the basic fundamentals from the beginning is paramount because fixing bad habits is trouble. Most of your local public golf courses offer beginner "group" clinics where they talk/show all the basics from grip, setup to proper swing plane. They offer like 6 beginner lessons and also like 1 on course instruction... Learning from friends is just ok but they may not be able to convey what is really needed for beginners... The group lesson is what I did for my dad, mom, sister and myself and am still addicted to golf today and enjoy playing and watching now that I understand the sport....
References :
Ask among your friends, do any of them play. Go to a local driving range and see if someone there gives lessons. You need lessons. Get a bucket of balls and borrow a club, start whacking and some one will start giving you advice, most of it will be wrong.
References :
You can try to search on the internet -- there are many golf lessons in there. You just need to be resourceful. Or you can try this site GolfTipsandVideos.com.

After searching the basics you can now try what you learned in a golf course.
References :
Read a few golf books, pick a tour player with a similar body type as yours and base your golf swing after theirs until you get comfortable with enough with the game.

Its a short answer and a simple one, but I hope it helps
References :
I'd recommend picking up a basic golf encyclopedia that covers all areas of things you need to learn. The one I have is old and it is called "Total Golf." In these they go over pretty much everything from getting the right grips, shafts, club heads, gloves, shoes etc. Of course they have swing techniques and a database of shots to try from pitching and chipping to punch outs and high carries. Obviously you wont be able to learn them all right away but get yourself a set of starter clubs, a few golf gloves, a big bucket of balls and head out to the range and start practicing! Just don't forget to stop by and spend equal time on that little putting green too!
